There were 52 more deaths linked to COVID-19 reported Thursday, but the high number is being blamed on a lag time due to the province needing multiple sources to verify numbers.

Manitoba Public Health released its weekly COVID data surveillance Thursday, showing 52 new deaths due to COVID-19, including 15 that occurred in the week ending May 28. The province had stated in previous comments missed deaths would be added to subsequent reports.

As of Thursday, 1,980 Manitobans have died from the virus.

Public health officials stated in previous comments the lag in reporting deaths is partly due to public health no longer investigating cases. The government must now rely on multiple sources to report COVID-19 deaths, which can cause delays.

Between May 22 and May 28, hospitalizations rose compared to the previous week. There were 120 people admitted to hospital, with nine intensive care admissions. The previous week, there were 112 hospital admissions and 21 intensive care admissions.

There were 416 confirmed laboratory cases and test positivity decreased from 15.4 per cent to 13 per cent. The previous week had 537 laboratory confirmed cases. Public health officials have stated on multiple occasions this is an undercount due to limited access to PCR testing.

Of those cases, 226 were in Winnipeg, 69 in Prairie Mountain Health, 46 in Southern Health, 38 in Northern Health and 37 in Interlake-Eastern.

Labs completed an average of 621 tests per day for the week ending May 28, compared to 704 the previous week.

Seven new outbreaks were added to the list, including four in health-care facilities and three in long-term care homes.
