Crocus students successful at Skills Canada

Three of the four Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School students who qualified for this year’s Skills Canada competition, which took place last week in Vancouver, walked away from the national contest with a medal in their respective category.

This group includes students James Blyth (silver, automobile technology), Faith Kasprick (silver, job skills demonstration) and Wade Robbins (bronze, mechanical engineering CAD)

Crocus student Andres Rincon also took part in the cooking portion of this year’s competition.

All four pupils qualified for this year’s Skills Canada event by medaling in the 24th Skills Manitoba contest, which was held in April.

This year’s Skills Canada contest featured around 350 students from across the country who competed in 45 different categories that all tie into the trade and technology sectors.

Music in the Park returning with full lineup

The City of Brandon unveiled the lineup for its 2022 Music in the Park program on Thursday, announcing that the concert series will officially kick off this coming Tuesday with a performance from the Vincent Massey jazz band and choral ensemble.

This year’s program will run until Aug. 30, with a different local band or artist scheduled to perform at Princess Park every Tuesday starting at 6:30 p.m.

The rest of the city’s 2022 Music in the Park concert series will feature the following acts: Michelle Boudreau (June 14), Until It’s No Fun (June 21), Along for the Ride (June 28), Badd Brothers (July 5), Catch 2 (July 12), Hearts Desire (July 19), Jakeleg Blues Band (July 26), Lucky Ned (Aug. 2), Allen McColl (Aug. 9), Lazy Creek Express (Aug. 16), Misty Street, Anastasia Jane & Sage (Aug. 23) and Shameless Folk (Aug. 30).

For each show, the public is encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for outdoor music-listening comfort.

The Music in the Park concert series has remained an annual summertime event in Brandon for more than two decades.

While Music in the Park was relegated to an online-only format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series returned to Princess Park last summer.

Students each awarded $1,200 grant

Graduating high school students Jordan McGregor of Waskada and Raegan Ricard of Baldur are both recipients of this year’s Valeyo Learning Grant, which entitles both of them to a $1,200 scholarship.

According to a Thursday news release, these grants are for students who are members of Sunrise Credit Union and have excelled in academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

McGregor, who is graduating from Waskada School this month, checks all those boxes.

Outside of being on the honour roll, McGregor has taken part in a variety of extra-curricular activities, which includes maintaining the Lions Club Community Field, serving on his school’s student advisory committee and coaching minor hockey.

McGregor is planning to enrol in a pre-employment heavy equipment technician program and attend Olds College this fall.

Meanwhile, Ricard has established her own reputation at Prairie Mountain High School, serving as student council president, spearheading this year’s grad committee and participating in a variety of sports.

Ricard has also dedicated a lot of her time working in the Westman community, which includes serving as a dietary, laundry and health-care aide at the Rock Lake Personal Care Home and Prairie View Lodge in Pilot Mound.

In terms of what the future holds, Ricard intends to attend Brandon University in September and take classes in the pre-professional dentistry program.

The Valeyo Learning Grant is offered to students who live in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
