The Brandon Police Service wants to help kind kids stay cool this summer.

BPS is preparing to launch Operation Brain Freeze, which is meant to reward youth for their acts of kindness and for following safety guidelines this summer.

From Wednesday until Sept. 5, children seen by a police officer being kind or playing safe could get a coupon for a free ice cream treat from Western Nations Gas Bar on 18th Street North or a Big Cool slush from any Brandon Heritage Co-op gas station, according to a police press release.

The program is meant to recognize young people’s contributions to the community in small ways.

“This will be a very fun program for our officers to be a part of,” BPS Chief Wayne Balcaen said in a press release.

“Recognizing and rewarding positive actions of youth isn’t something our officers normally get the opportunity to do. We hope that this small gesture will help build on the youth’s confidence and sense of community.”

Children could get a coupon for obeying the rules of the road on their bikes, wearing a helmet, picking up garbage or sharing the playground with others, police say.

“We are glad to work with the Brandon Police Service on this community building effort. We hope for a safe and fun summer for everyone, especially the kids in our communities,” Brandon Heritage Co-op general manager Dennis Laing said in the press release.

Gambler First Nation Chief David Ledoux said he was also glad to see the program make an effort to recognize young people in Brandon.

Coupons from the program can be redeemed until Sept. 30 and officers are looking for opportunities to give them out.
