The Brandon School Division’s top-paid employee of 2021 worked there for less than two months that year, according to a report.
On Monday, the Brandon School Division released its public sector compensation report for employees and elected trustees.
At the top of the list for salaries was former superintendent Marc Casavant, who officially resigned on Feb. 25 the same year.
The Sun reported at the time that Mathew Gustafson, who had been an assistant superintendent for the division, was officially appointed as acting superintendent at a board of trustees meeting on Jan. 25, 2021, though he had been acting in the role since Jan. 4.
No reason for Casavant’s departure was given, except that he was to “pursue other opportunities.”
Casavant, who also resigned as chair of the Brandon Police Board around the same time, was compensated with $225,336 in 2021. That’s more than he earned in 2019 and 2020, which was $192,565.35 and $192,570, respectively.
The chair of the BSD’s board of trustees, Linda Ross, confirmed via phone that the information in the report is correct but said she could not comment any further because it is a personnel matter.
For Gustafson, who was promoted from assistant superintendent to acting and then permanent superintendent, his compensation totalled $202,908 in 2021.
The third-highest paid BSD employee was assistant superintendent Susan Gilleshammer, who earned $182,278. Fourth was secretary-treasurer Denis Labossiere, who earned $181,895.
The school division is legally required to list all employees who earn more than $75,000 in a report every year.
A total of 601 employees listed on the report earned a collective $59,819,388. Teachers are the most represented group on the list, making a collective $48,470,524.
Principals made a collective $3,243,829, vice-principals made $2,319,625, social workers made $1,260,698 and speech language pathologists made $922,947.
The average salary of the employees listed on the report was $99,368. Slightly higher was the median salary at $100,347.
Members of the BSD’s board of trustees earned a total of $148,446. That’s up from the 2020 total of $121,953, though there were vacant positions on the board for several months that year. In 2019, trustees took home $144,761.
Ross earned the most at $20,241, followed by Sherilyn Bambridge at $16,705, Jason Gobeil at $16,014, Delvina Kejick at $16,014, Jim Murray and Blaine Foley at $15,892 and Calistus Ekenna, Kim Fallis and Lisa Letain at the bottom with compensation of $15,814.
