A Rivers residence was demolished Saturday afternoon after it was consumed by fire.

After receiving a report of a structure fire around 3:49 p.m., the Rivers Daly Fire Department reported to a house on the 600 block of Fourth Street, which was engulfed in flames.

Because of the scale of the fire, local first responders immediately called for backup, eventually receiving support from Rapid City Emergency Services and the Oak River Fire Department.

Once local fire crews confirmed the house was unoccupied and beyond saving, their approach to fighting the blaze shifted to protecting nearby homes and vehicles in the neighbourhood.

Firefighters set up portable water tanks at the corner of Fourth and Columbia streets and in the middle of the 600 block of Fourth Street to ensure a consistent water supply was available.

Once the fire was under control, Kroeger Backhoe Services was called to demolish the home, thereby ensuring the fire was completely extinguished without the possibility of re-ignition.

The scene of the fire was cleared by 10 p.m.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page Sunday evening, the Rivers Daly Fire Department thanked local residents for their support throughout the ordeal, since they consistently supplied first responders with water and Gatorade and helped move water lines as needed.

“Your help was sincerely appreciated on a very hot day and ensured that this was contained to a single home, with no damage to any surrounding homes,” the statement read.

The cause of the blaze was still unknown as of Monday afternoon, according to Rivers fire Chief Richard Brown.
