Tentative agreements have been struck on behalf of Prairie Mountain Health personal care home and hospital workers, their union announced Friday. They’ll now have a chance to review the contracts before putting them to a ratification vote.

The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union reported that two of its health-care bargaining committees reached tentative agreements with Prairie Mountain Health and the Interlake-Eastern regional health authority late Thursday evening.

MGEU announced the deal in a press release issued Friday afternoon, although it didn’t provide specifics. In total, the agreement covers 6,000 personal care home and hospital workers in the two health regions, including 4,355 from PMH.

“These workers deserve recognition for the pivotal role they play within or health care system, and these new agreements are a significant step in the right direction,” MGEU president Kyle Ross was quoted as saying in the release.

Ross said the agreements include better pay and “ground-breaking” provisions for home care workers that include paid rest periods, evening and night premiums and maternity leave top-up. He said the agreements also commit to further negotiations “in the very near future” on the expansion of sick leave, health care benefits, and pensions.

Prairie Mountain Health officials weren’t immediately available Friday afternoon for comment.

The previous contract for facility workers — such as health-care aides, dietary workers, and laundry, maintenance and clerical staff — expired in 2017, the union said. The last agreement for community support workers — including home care workers and direct service workers — expired in 2018.

A summary of contract highlights will first be shared with members only, MGEU stated. Members will review the deal during meetings to be held sometime during the next couple of weeks, prior to a ratification vote for which the union didn’t provide a date.

Both bargaining committees recommend that employees accept the offers, MGEU stated in its press release.
