Assiniboine Community College’s Prairie Innovation Centre for Sustainable Agriculture received a $100,000 donation from Maxim Truck & Trailer on Friday.
The Manitoba-based heavy-duty truck and trailer dealership gifted the money to the innovation centre to help it realize its goal of addressing industry and economic needs in the agriculture sector.
Troy Hamilton, president of Maxim, said in a press release that agriculture and food production are cornerstones of the prairie economy and something his business is proud to support through its donation to the centre.

“Maxim Truck & Trailer is proud of our roots in Manitoba. Supporting our community is a priority for us, having been founded in Manitoba over 40 years ago.”
The donation will go a long way toward the centre’s goal of creating an enhanced agricultural training capacity. Derrick Turner, director of advancement and external relations at the college, said in a phone interview with the Sun that it will help the centre expand seats in agriculture, environment and related technology programs from fewer than 300 to more than 800 students.
The college has been fundraising for the expansion for the past two years, Turner said, and Maxim’s donation is a huge step forward.
“To have them as a national organization come forward and make a donation like this … is incredibly helpful in our fundraising, but it’s also satisfying,” Turner said. “It validates the type of things that we want to do with this centre.”
The centre’s main goal is about increasing employment in the agricultural sector. Turner said there’s a huge need right now for people to fill roles across the board in the agricultural industry.
“We’re creating an expanding list of programs that we already have, but also new programs for businesses that are actually out there right now needing these types of people,” Turner said. “We’re creating programs like chemical technology and food processing.”
Turner said donations from companies like Maxim Truck & Trailer show that more and more people are recognizing the importance of a strong agricultural sector within Manitoba.
“If agriculture is strong in our province, it positively affects them.”
The Prairie Innovation Centre campaign started in 2019. According to the centre, the project has raised more than $12 million in private industry support.
The Sun reached out to Maxim Truck & Trailer for an interview Friday morning but did not hear back by press time.
