Employers are reminded to properly train and supervise their employees after a construction worker fell 10 feet and fractured their spine.

Manitoba Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services issued the warning Thursday, after a Beausejour-based construction company was fined under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

The fine relates to a July 16, 2018 incident in the Rural Municipality of Alexander.

A Sandhill Construction employee was on the top platform of a movable steel scaffold, helping to install rafters on a two-storey garage. Five rafters, yet to be secured to the top girder, fell in a domino effect. One struck the scaffold and the worker fell 10 feet to the a plywood surface.

On July 19, Dwight Reimer, sole proprietor of Sandhill Construction, pleaded guilty to failing to provide information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the safety, health and welfare of a worker. The court imposed a fine of $18,500.
