Tickets still available for Hops and Props

Tickets are still on sale for the inaugural Hops and Props Beer Tasting fundraiser.

The event is happening 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum. Ticket sales are picking up, said Steven Hayter, executive director of the museum, but there are plenty left.

Only 150 tickets are being sold and each cost $25. This is also an 18-plus only event.

Visitors will be able to sample some Manitoba beers in the museum’s Second World War hangar, including Brandon’s Black Wheat Brewing, Neepawa’s Farmery, and three from Winnipeg: Barnhammer, Torque and Little Brown Jug. Staff will be on hand to talk about the museum and the history of the flight school.

There will also be a food truck providing snacks.

Tickets are available at bit.ly/3p55ATI.

Intake open for arts, culture and sports grants

Applications are now open for the Province of Manitoba’s new $100-million Arts, Culture and Sport in Communities Fund, the government announced Tuesday.

Of that $100 million set aside for the next three years, $34 million of it is available this year.

There are three funding streams available to organizations and municipalities through the initiative.

For capital projects, organizations can apply for up to $5 million on an equal cost-sharing basis to develop and improve arts, culture and sport facilities.

Community celebrations, both one-time and recurring, can get funding of up to $5,000.

The last category is small capital projects and special initiatives. Under this category, projects can receive between 50 and 100 per cent of funding depending on their overall cost and can include developmental opportunities for organizations, training, technology, equipment and more.

Brandon city manager Ron Bowles told the Sun on Wednesday that administration still needs to consult with city council on what to apply for and whether the city will be making one or multiple applications, but there are three projects he believes will be considered.

Those include renovations to the Library/Arts Building, the replacement of the Park Community Centre and further funding the outdoor sports complex at the corner of First Street North and Veterans Way.

Sharp objects thrown at police

A 27-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he allegedly stabbed his neighbour multiple times before fleeing from police, throwing various sharp objects at them in the process.

Police received a report of an assault around 2:32 a.m. and arrived at the scene of the incident shortly thereafter.

The female victim had been stabbed several times in her upper body and told police that her neighbour was responsible.

After making contact with the suspect in the upstairs suite of his building, located on the 100 block of Fourth Street, the man allegedly launched “ninja-style” throwing stars at the officers before fleeing the scene.

During the foot chase that followed, the suspect also allegedly threw a knife at the pursuing officers.

He was eventually apprehended and lodged at Brandon Police Service headquarters.

The man was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to face charges of aggravated assault, breaking and entering and assault with a weapon.

The Brandon Police Service major crime section continues to investigate this incident.

Stop-motion workshop postponed

A workshop on the basics of stop-motion animation has been rescheduled.

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba was planning to run Introduction to Stop Motion Animation with Erica Lowe and Chris Reid this Saturday. However, Ana Camelo, digital project co-ordinator for the gallery, said on Wednesday it is being pushed back to Sept. 17.

People can still register for the event. Individuals, families and groups are welcome.

Registration is $85 for gallery members and $105 for non-members. For groups, at least one person must be a gallery member.

Everyone who registers can use whatever objects they want to animate for the workshop, but they must have a smartphone that can take photos and run video.

All participants will be given access to an application to produce their videos.

The gallery is encouraging participants to keep their films and enter them into an animation art festival for Culture Days in October.
