With less than a month until this year’s instalment of the Super Strength for Super Kids fundraiser in Brandon on Sept. 18, one of the organizers is putting out a call for more people to register as participants.
Organized through The Dream Factory in Winnipeg, the annual strongman competition fundraiser is aimed at helping kids with medical issues achieve their dreams.
For this year’s recipient, seven-year-old Ava Trout, that dream is to go to Disneyland after a medical battle that included liver issues, meningitis and a bone marrow transplant.

“I have sponsors sending me cheques, which is fantastic, but I need people fired up to come and lift some weights,” said Quentin Derhak, a local realtor who originally conceived the event as a deadlift competition before deciding to change the format to make it more accessible.
Last year, there were approximately 18 people competing, and the parking lot at host venue Anytime Fitness was packed. Derhak said he thinks this year will be even bigger, but only four to six people have signed up to compete so far.
“If I can get between 12 and 20 people to actually do the event, then it’s a show,” Derhak.
While last year’s edition had a local food truck set up, Derhak said isn’t sure if there will be any present this year because the event will be on the same time as the Food Truck Warz event.
Derhak said he’s hopeful that visitors to that event might wander over to the fundraiser afterwards and chip in.
Other activities at the event will involve kids versions of the strongman events, and more are being planned. Like last year’s visit from Superman, guest appearances from superheroes are being planned. Derhak added that he has also had a Disney princess reach out on Instagram and ask to be involved.
At this point, Derhak said he’s collected approximately 30 per cent of the $10,000 target.
“Volunteers are great, but come out and support it,” he said. “Come out and check it out. Bring your gym stuff because maybe you want to jump in and that’s always welcome.”
