Local movie lovers will have to wait a little longer to get their fill of independent and arthouse cinema, as the Evans Theatre staff had to push their official return date to at least mid-October.

While the volunteer-run theatre was originally slated to open its doors Friday following a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, technical issues are getting in the way.

“We’ve run into a bit of a snag with our projection system and, unfortunately, we won’t be able to show movies on the date we’d hoped,” an Evans volunteer wrote on the theatre’s blog Sunday. The new target date is Oct. 14.

The Evans team is also hoping to retain the lineup of screenings announced earlier this month.

The list of films includes the Canadian coming-of-age drama “Scarborough,” the British screen adaptation of playwright Alan Bennett’s “Allelujah” and the critically acclaimed sci-fi adventure “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

The Evans Theatre hasn’t been operating since March 2020, with the space having shut down following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While many Manitoba movie theatres have since reopened their doors, the Evans was bound by Brandon University’s COVID restrictions, which were loosened in April.

The Evans Theatre is located right next to BU’s John E. Robbins Library and has been screening movies for the public since the 1960s.
