She joined the Neepawa Kin Club to meet new people. Seventeen years later, she’s Kin Canada’s vice-president.

At the end of August, Amanda Naughton-Gale was named vice-president at Kin Canada’s 2022 National Convention in Hamilton, Ont. Naughton-Gale, who works as the community ministries director at the Salvation Army in Neepawa, joined the local Kin Club to meet new people when she first arrived in town.

“I was new to Neepawa, and met another person who happened to be involved in the past in the club and said this was a great way to meet people in the community and a great way to give back to the community,” Naughton-Gale said.

She said through the Kin Club she’s been able to fulfil her desire to make change in the community, to help others and make the town a better place for everyone. Now, she’s looking forward to serving the Kin Club at the local and national levels, she said.

“I am truly blessed to have been able to use my skills and develop my skills through Kin, and now to be able to lead the association … to make our association better, to make it have more impact in communities.”

Recent achievements of Neepawa’s Kin Club include a $1,785 donation toward the installation of Neepawa Middle School’s new playground, and donating the same amount toward the purchase of a special electric-powered bicycle that will help seniors and people with low mobility travel around town.

The club’s Hugs for the Holidays senior adoption campaign saw 253 senior citizens in Neepawa receive a small gift and card at Christmas, letting them know that they matter to the community.

“It was so good for mental health and isolation, and all of those things that seniors have been facing over these last couple of years,” Naughton-Gale said, adding the club is hoping to run the program again this holiday season.

Throughout her work with the local club, Naughton-Gale said, she’s been inspired by her fellow club members’ hard work.

“It really is humbling how hard our members work and the dedication they have to their community.”

In total, Kin Clubs in Canada raised $28 million during the last year for their communities, Naughton-Gale said. She added that, even though she’ll be serving on a local and national level, she won’t lose sight of the needs and desires of the Neepawa club.

Denny Phillips, who has volunteered with the Neepawa Kin Club for nearly 20 years, said she is confident that Naughton-Gale can handle her new job with poise while still making a big difference in her local community.

“When she was looking to run for national vice-president, she was very conscious of checking with club members and standing behind us to make sure our club continues to exist in the Neepawa area,” Phillips said.

Naughton-Gale has been an incredible force for good in the club ever since she started, Phillips added.

“It’s been wonderful working with Amanda. She’s the first one to step up and do anything that the club needs, coming up with ideas for projects.”

Naughton-Gale will serve as vice-president for the next year. After that, she will step into a one-year term as president, then serve another year as past-president of Kin Canada.

The national organization was founded in 1920 and has more than 5,000 members in over 400 Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin Clubs nationwide.
