A man and woman from Winnipeg have been accused of a series of crimes that included forcing someone to drive them to Brandon at knifepoint.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the string of events started on Sept. 14 at 9:29 p.m., when patrol units heard about a stabbing at an apartment block on the 200 block of Edison Avenue in the provincial capital.

They discovered an injured man in his 50s who had thought he was being taken to a party by a woman he knew, only to be hit with a blunt object, robbed of his belongings and stabbed by an unknown man.

The man and woman then stole the man’s SUV and left the area. The next day, around 1:50 a.m., they ran out of fuel on the Perimeter Highway.

Not knowing the vehicle was stolen, a man picked the pair up and took them to a gas station. After returning with fuel, police say that they were unable to get the stolen SUV working.

The pair then stabbed the man and attempted to rob him, but he managed to flee.

Several days later, on Sept. 21, another victim met up with the pair, having known the female suspect previously. After ending up in a hotel suite on the 200 block of Main Street, the suspects held the victim at knifepoint and forced him to drive them in his car to Brandon.

This victim managed to escape when they were filling up with gas, calling police afterwards.

Later on, the RCMP arrested the pair in Moosomin, Sask., and transferred the suspects to the WPS’s major crimes unit.

The man, 25-year-old Arnold Issac Daniels of Winnipeg, was charged with three counts of robbery, kidnapping, forcible confinement, aggravated assault and three counts of possession of a weapon. He was also processed for a previous arrest warrant for being unlawfully at large.

The woman, 27-year-old Maryanne Diana Candice Sawicki of Winnipeg, was charged with three counts of robbery, kidnapping, forcible confinement and aggravated assault.

Both the Brandon Police Service and the Moosomin RCMP were thanked by WPS for their assistance in the case.

When reached for additional comment on the Brandon elements of this case, a WPS spokesperson said the public relations officer with knowledge of the incident would not be back in the office until Friday.

However, the Brandon Police Service’s public information officer, Sgt. Kirby Sararas, confirmed that BPS had met with the third victim after he escaped and obtained a victim statement from him.

Sararas added that BPS was able to pull security camera footage from when the victim escaped, which occurred at one of the gas stations at the intersection of 18th Street North and the Trans-Canada Highway. According to her, there is no record of that victim needing medical attention.

This information, she said, has been passed along to WPS.
