There’s a pot of cash waiting for whoever can pick the right card to help Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op.

The organization is running a fundraiser of a different kind this year and is calling on everyone in Brandon try their luck in Smack the Jack. Tickets are on sale, and starting Oct. 5 — and every Wednesday after that — one ticket will be drawn, and the winner will get a chance to try to find the Jack of Spades among 54 envelopes. The winner gets the accumulated prize money.

However, everyone will be a winner, said Don Kostesky, president of the Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op board. Those who pick the wrong card get a consolation prize. He explained there are 54 cards; a full deck of 52, plus two Joker cards. As an added bonus, whoever picks either of the Joker cards gets a consolation prize and $100.

This game is similar to Chase the Ace, he said, in which the game is run in one location and usually concluded in one day. This will be more of a hybrid of a raffle and Chase the Ace, and tickets will be sold and drawn every week until the Jack of Spades is found.

“We divided it up into envelopes and we will be doing the draw live at 1 p.m. every Wednesday and broadcasted on Westman Access 12 until somebody wins,” he said. “People don’t have to view it. We will contact the person, as long as their number is on the ticket.”

When a ticket is purchased, the ticket buyer chooses which envelope they want opened and it is recorded on their ticket, said Kostesky. If their ticket is drawn, the corresponding envelope will be opened at the studio of Westman Communications so that everyone can see which card has been revealed. Brandon Seniors for Seniors will contact the winner to let them know they won. They can come to the office of Seniors for Seniors on Park Avenue with their half of the winning ticket to claim their prize. However, if the winner can’t come to the office, the Smack the Jack chairman will go to their home to confirm they have the winning ticket and to present them their winnings.

Depending on how quickly the game is concluded, Smack the Jack could run for more than a year, he said, giving the cumulative jackpot plenty of opportunity to grow.

Ticket sales started this week.

“The longer it runs, the more excitement builds and the more money someone could win,” Kostesky said.

It currently stands at $1,000.

Tickets are $5 for one, $10 for three, $20 for eight and are available at the Seniors for Seniors office, most seniors living homes in Brandon, such as Riverheights Terrace, Victoria Landing, Rotary Villas, Lions Manor and all Brandon seniors co-ops.

As well, there will be a booth at the Heritage Co-op every Thursday, Friday and Saturday selling tickets. As a non-profit, Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op gets most of their funding from government grants and donations. It’s a constant challenge to have enough money to keep providing services for their clients.

Since Prairie Oasis Senior Centre closed this past summer, Seniors for Seniors has been busier than usual. Many of the activities and groups that met at Prairie Oasis have moved to Seniors for Seniors and are now sharing space with programs and services Seniors for Seniors has always provided.

All of that requires money, Kostesky said.

“We don’t want to end up in the same boat as Prairie Oasis because we are the last dedicated seniors centre in Brandon,” he said. “We need to do this to continue, and we hope people will latch on to this Smack the Jack and help us reach our goals.”

When Seniors for Seniors applied for the gaming licence with Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA), Kostesky said they were told they loved the idea.

A spokesperson for the LGCA stated in an email it licenses many card-type raffles each year and there are two formats. While both involve tickets being sold and a winner chosen to pick a card for a chance to win a prize, in the case of Seniors for Seniors, raffle tickets are sold through various outlets rather than at one location. However, the chase-the-card raffle licence category doesn’t differentiate if the event is conducted in-person or broadcasted.
