With the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, businesses are eager to serve their customers in fuller capacity.

To help with that, Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM) is reaching out to private businesses to talk about what WEM can do to help them, at the Riverbank Discovery Centre on Oct. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Westman businesses are welcome to attend the session, where they will learn about what they can do to advance their companies, said regional manager Brock Ludwig.

Even though WEM is solely dedicated to workplace training and skills development, there are businesses that don’t know about what the organization does and how it can help.

The pandemic was tough on businesses, not just for bottom lines, but for hiring and managing staff, he said.

“This is an information-gathering session, as well as a chance for people to get out and meet again and for businesses to find out how we can help them as individual businesses,” said Ludwig. “We felt like it was a good time to do this.”

The session will be similar to a chamber of commerce luncheon, he noted.

There will be social time for attendees at the start, but the bulk of the session will be led by a manager from the WEM head office in Winnipeg, who’s an expert in workplaces. The spokesperson will give a presentation on how operations can train their staff around the nine essential skills of business: numeracy, communication, creativity and innovation, problem-solving, reading, digital, collaboration, adaptability and writing. Afterward, there will be time for attendees to socialize with each other.

Essential skills training helps businesses succeed, Ludwig said, especially in profits and expenses. Those in turn improve employee retention, productivity, efficiency and engagement. In addition, Workplace Education Manitoba can customize training plans based on specific needs.

There are two main objectives for WEM: pre-employment training and workshops for people looking for employment, and workplace training for private businesses.

Since the pandemic has waned, Ludwig said, the pre-employment training side of WEM has been very busy as people search for jobs. It’s the workplace side that’s trying to ramp back up.

“Even during COVID, there were a large number of individuals that were needing our service, and we did that online,” he said. “Now, we are trying to get the businesses on board to see what we can do for them.”

WEM was limited to what it could do during pandemic restrictions, but now it can go back out and talk directly to businesses, Ludwig said.

Businesses that want to take part in next month’s event can contact Ludwig at BLudwig@wem.mb.ca or call 204-574-8567.
