Members of Brandon Fire and Emergency Services went to Crow’s General Store Saturday afternoon to extinguish a fire, although the building didn’t sustain any damage.

Capt. Marv Janzen told the Sun that BFES was called at around 12:05 p.m. to deal with a skid steer loader that had caught fire while owner Don Ditchfield was using it to complete some yard work.

“The owner was using the skid steer loader and he said that the cab suddenly filled up with smoke,” Janzen said Sunday morning. “So he got out and tried to extinguish it with a fire extinguisher and I guess the extinguisher wasn’t quite big enough to knock it all out. So by the time he called us and we got there it was going again and we used some water and some foam to put it out.”

Janzen told the Sun that the loader was a complete loss because of the fire.

However, Ditchfield confirmed over the phone that the flames did not spread to his business, meaning that his day-to-day operations will not be impacted moving forward.

At this point, Ditchfield is still unsure about how this loader caught fire in the place.

Crow’s General Store is located at 33 17th St. East in Brandon.

This local ice cream shop and coffee shop has been operating since 2016 and represents a labour of love for Ditchfield, who spent nearly a decade constructing it.
