A man who attempted to rob a local Shoppers Drug Mart at gunpoint in spring pleaded guilty in a Brandon courtroom Monday, although his sentence will be finalized after he undergoes a couple months of drug treatment.

Salvatore Salvaggio, who was 32 years old at the time of his arrest, attended court via video conference, as he’s spent the last several months behind bars.

Around 8:50 p.m. May 9, Salvaggio attended the Shoppers Drug Mart located at 139 Victoria Ave. East, and demanded hydromorphone pills from employees while armed with a handgun.

Salvaggio ended up leaving the business empty-handed and without harming any staff.

Brandon police located Salvaggio hiding in the bushes nearby at around 9:13 p.m. and placed him under arrest. A local K-9 unit was used to search for the handgun, which was located and seized by police.

While Salvaggio could be facing some serious time in jail for this attempted armed robbery, he was granted a consent release Monday so he can attend a drug treatment program in Winnipeg.

However, Crown attorney Andrew Sieklicki told Salvaggio that he must comply with any rules laid out by Morberg House or St. Boniface Street Links during this time, which includes abiding by a curfew.

Salvaggio will also be subject to a firearms prohibition during his consent release and is barred from attending the east-end Shoppers Drug Mart in Brandon.

A sentencing date for Salvaggio will be determined after he’s undergone this drug treatment program for roughly two months.
