Assiniboine Community College’s Practical Nursing program recently received a $1-million bump from the Joyce Family Foundation, with that money being set aside to support financial awards that are accessible to students entering their studies next fall.
Executive director Maureen O’Neill announced in a Wednesday news release that the Joyce Family Foundation board decided to make this donation due to the current lack of health-care workers in Manitoba, with ACC’s Practical Nursing program offering a possible way to improve this critical shortage.
“When a student has the potential and drive for such a noble profession, this bursary will remove some of the financial barrier to achieving that goal,” O’Neill said.

The Joyce Family Foundation plans to distribute this $1 million through five annual awards of $9,000, distributed to recipients in two instalments for year one and year two of their studies.
Preference will be given to those in financial need who have overcome obstacles and adversity.
Advanced Education Minister Jon Reyes commended the Joyce Family Foundation for this large donation last week, pledging to “match private dollars at a one-to-two ratio and stretch this investment for nursing students by an additional 50 per cent.”
The Joyce Family Foundation is a private, family foundation that was created and run by Canadian entrepreneur Ronald V. Joyce until his death in 2019.
The Joyce Family board aims to carry out Ron Joyce’s vision moving forward, with this recent $1-million investment in ACC nursing students being a prime example.
“This significant donation will open a door for many hopeful nursing students, enhancing their opportunity to be successful in the pursuit of a health-care career,” ACC president Mark Frison said Wednesday.
