A Brandon man accused of animal cruelty was under an order not to have animals when authorities found the carcasses of 14 kittens and two rabbits at his home, police say.

The man was arrested after a pair of citizens who had both given him kittens grew suspicious and tipped off the Chief Veterinary Officer, said Brandon Police Service public information officer Sgt. Kirby Sararas.

“These individuals got talking and thought it was odd that they both gave him kittens,” Sararas said.

Police previously reported in June that the same man had been charged with injuring or endangering an animal after an investigation initiated by the Brandon Police Service animal control officers revealed he had acquired and injured domesticated animals, mostly cats. Police released him on conditions to appear in court on Aug. 15.

On Wednesday, Sararas said she couldn’t provide further details about that incident, except that it appeared to involve eight kittens, but noted that one of the conditions of the man’s release was that he not possess any animals.

Subsequently, Sararas said, two citizens who knew each other, seemingly unaware of the man’s history, grew suspicious when they realized they had both given him kittens. They contacted the Chief Veterinary Officer, which was aware of the man’s ban from having animals, and that office contacted police, who went to the man’s home.

“Police attended with animal control … to the residence and located the carcasses,” Sararas said, adding two living cats were also found and taken to a veterinarian, although their conditions weren’t available.

Based on court documents, Sararas said it appears the carcasses found were of 14 kittens and two rabbits. She couldn’t say where precisely the bodies were located at the property, how they were found or how the animals died. She said necropsies being done to determine cause of death haven’t been completed yet.

The man is now facing an additional 16 counts of animal cruelty on accusations that he willfully, and without lawful cause, killed the rabbits and kittens. He’s also charged with 18 counts of breaching his release order by possessing those animals plus the two live cats police found.

Jess Nichols, 28, was arrested and appeared in Brandon provincial court on Wednesday. He remains in custody and will appear in court again at a later date.
