A reunion is planned this summer for a Brandon high school that ceased to exist almost 50 years ago.
The call is out for the graduating classes of 1973 and 1974 from Brandon Collegiate Institute, now known as École New Era School.
The two-storey brick-and-stone school was built at 527 Louise Ave. in 1907. A year later it was named Brandon Collegiate Institute (BCI) and was a high school for the next 66 years, until it changed to kindergarten to Grade 9 in 1974.

A group of graduates are planning a reunion weekend this June for all students, staff and teachers who attended BCI to share stories, memories and even the school song, said Jody Morgan, chairman of the reunion committee.
“I graduated in 1973, so it’s our 50th year, but the class of 1974 that followed was the absolute last Grade 12, so we decided to include them in our celebrations,” Morgan said. “Besides, there are a number of my female classmates who married guys in the ’74 class, so it’s going to be fun.”
Planning for a reunion for hundreds of people takes a committee, and the group has been working for the past two and a half years trying to find past students and teachers. They’ve also secured the band that played at the BCI spring social in 1973 — the Sons of Eve.
Activities during the June weekend will include a Friday meet-and-greet, tour of the school on Saturday followed by a dinner and dance. Morgan admitted 50 years is a long time and people may have changed, but that will be the best part of seeing everyone.
“I’m kind of reliving my youth this way. I wasn’t a social butterfly in high school and I worked by the time I was in Grade 11, so on Fridays and Saturdays I was pulling shifts at Safeway. From the feedback and replies, I’m getting excited,” Morgan said.
Brandon Collegiate Institute’s 50th Reunion is scheduled for June 23-25. For more information, email bciclass1973@gmail.com.
