Manitoba Parks is rolling out a new campsite reservation platform this spring, which will provide campers with a “modern, user-friendly” website for booking campsites, the province says.
“Provincial parks are treasured by Manitobans, and we want to provide a positive experience when guests book a spot at a provincial campground,” Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt stated in a news release on Friday.
The province is asking campers to log into their existing Parks Reservation Service accounts and take note of their preferred sites from past reservations before March 24. After March 27, campers will be able to create a new account and browse campsites before reservations open.
Campsite reservations open at 7 a.m. over six days beginning on April 3. Reservations will also continue to be accepted through the call centre.
All campers are required to create a new account as reservation histories will not be transferred to the new system.
An email address will now be tied to just one account in the new system, whereas in the old system, household members could share an email address. The province says this new change will ensure that outdated contact information is not transferred to the new system.
The new site will also use a virtual waiting room and queuing system for campsite reservations to help manage site traffic on busy reservation opening days.
Between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. on opening days, users on the site will be placed in a virtual waiting room, where they will be assigned a random number in the queue at 7 a.m. Any users visiting the site after 7 a.m. will be assigned a number at the end of the queue behind those who were in the queue before 7 a.m.
The province is working with Camis Inc., a company based in Guelph, Ont., to provide the new reservation service. Camis has provided call centre services to Manitoba Parks for the past two seasons.
The new site will still have photos of the campsite as the old system did, and the $10 non-refundable reservation fee will continue to apply to all reservations.
There will be no alert system for campers if there is a cancellation, though the province says it is “considering options for future enhancements” to the site.
