Throughout this week, members of Manitoba and Saskatchewan’s RCMP underwater recovery team have been conducting their ice diving re-qualification training under the frozen Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park.

The teams are made up of regular RCMP officers based across both provinces who, in addition to their regular duties, are on call when their respective underwater recovery teams are needed. Each team has a full-time URT co-ordinator — Cpl. Kathryn Ternier in Manitoba and Cpl. Jamie Diemert in Saskatchewan.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan conduct their training and re-qualifications together, three times a year, and also assist each other when necessary on underwater recoveries. Together, the two dive teams cover Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories as well as assist in other provinces by request.

On Monday, the team members arrived at Riding Mountain National Park and prepared the site on the lake near the Clear Lake Golf Course for their training, including cutting a hole in the ice for divers to enter the water.

On Tuesday, sets of two divers took turns doing emergency drills, which included searches when a team diver gets lost underwater.

Training, which also involves some classroom instruction, is expected to wrap up today with members returning to their home detachments tomorrow.
