City closes skating oval
The City of Brandon has shut down its public skating oval for the season due to increasingly warmer temperatures and deteriorating ice conditions.
“Closed” signs and barricades have been placed at the oval and all associated lighting will be turned off, including the Manitoba Hydro Power Smart Waterfall of Lights display.
This winter attraction, located just west of the Parks Complex on McGregor Avenue, opened to the public on Dec. 16, 2022, making the 2022-23 season one of the longest in the oval’s history, the city said in a Friday news release.
“The City of Brandon thanks all users of its outdoor recreational facilities for enjoying the spaces with respect and keeping them in good condition for all to enjoy,” the release stated.
Winter fair begins with Sunrise Breakfast
The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair kicks off on Monday with the annual Sunrise Breakfast.
The event takes place at the Brandon Keystone Centre’s historic Dome Building from 7 to 10 a.m., at a cost of $5. The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba will also accept donations of non-perishable food items for Samaritan House Ministries at the breakfast.
Other events taking place in the Dome Building include a 4-H Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, the annual Manitoba Pork Quality Luncheon on Wednesday, and the BMO Manitoba Farm Family Awards on Thursday.

BU hosting accomplished playwright
Winnipeg playwright Carolyn Gray will give a presentation on her career at Brandon University on Tuesday.
For the past several decades, Gray’s written work has been produced by Theatre Projects Manitoba, zone41 theatre, the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival, and independent theatre companies.
A founding member of the Adhere and Deny Object Puppet Theatre in Winnipeg, Gray has travelled around the province and overseas, where she worked in England with British playwright and actor Allan Williams.
Gray was the recipient of the John Hirsh Award for Most Promising Writer in Manitoba in 2008, and the Manitoba Day Award in 2007 for “The Elmwood Visitation (Scirocco),” a play that explored Winnipeg’s history in the 1920s as a renowned centre for psychic research.
The playwright is also the author of “Dean Gunnarson: The Making of an Escape Artist (Great Plains).” Currently, she works as the editor of the literary journal Prairie Fire in Winnipeg. Gray teaches creative writing at Brandon University and writes for true crime television productions.
Gray’s talk will take place in Room 206 of the university’s Clark Hall, at noon. The event is free and open to all.
The talk is part of the ongoing Creative Writing Literary Exchange speaker series in the Department of English, Drama and Creative Writing at the university.

Man arrested for impaired driving
A 53-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving after he stopped to urinate on the road before attempting to run away from police Friday.
Shortly before 3 a.m., police saw a car stop in the middle of the road in the 400 block of Victoria Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle, urinated on the road, then fled from police. According to breath samples obtained by police, the man’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
The man was charged and released to the care of a sober friend. He will appear in court on March 30.
Police looking for stolen vehicle
Police are looking for information about a stolen 2019 beige Hyundai Veloster.
Police say the vehicle was stolen shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday from a business parking lot in the 1900 block of Queens Avenue. Police believe the suspects may have gained access to the second set of keys.
The car has the Manitoba licence plate number KMH 135.
Anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact Brandon police.
Senior found breaching the peace
An 85-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning after he was found intoxicated in a residence.
The man was arrested for breach of the peace and was taken into custody until sober.
