Three people have been arrested and weapons were seized during a raid by the Brandon Police Service Major Crimes Unit that shut down 11th Street on Thursday morning.

The BPS tactical response team, complete with its armoured vehicle, filled the downtown street that morning, though police say the trio of suspects were “co-operative” and arrested without requiring any force.

“We got a firearm off the streets — that was the goal, so that was accomplished,” Brandon Police Service public information officer Sgt. Kirby Sararas told the Sun.

Police charged Shae-Lynn Dedelley, Delaine Azure and Larry Richard with a variety of weapons and drug charges.

Though the presence of the tactical team and the closing of the street to traffic were precautionary measures, police reportedly seized numerous weapons and a package of meth. A modified .22-calibre handgun was allegedly found among the arsenal of weapons police say they discovered in the home.

Police say there are no concerns over drug trafficking given the small quantity of meth.

The handgun was not stolen, police say, and some of the other weapons reportedly found appeared to be handmade. Multiple knives were allegedly discovered as well as a long spear-like instrument with its end pointed like an arrow.

“We do see people here in Brandon that are victims of assaults where an edged weapon is used,” Sararas said. “Because Canada has such good gun laws, people resort to what is available to them.”

Police don’t believe the circumstances to be gang related and could not provide the Sun with a timeline on the length of the investigation leading up to the raid and subsequent arrests.

In addition to the new weapons charges, including careless storage of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm, Richard is the only one of the three suspects with outstanding firearms charges. The 38-year-old has prior charges for allegedly tampering with the serial number of a firearm and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He has also racked up charges for failing to comply with a release order after being allegedly found in breech of his curfew and address conditions.

Azure was released from police custody and Richard and Dedelley will appear in court Monday.
