Brandon University recently completed renovations to its psychiatric nursing facilities in Winnipeg that will accommodate 50 per cent more students than before.

The updated space includes larger classrooms, more equipment (such as realistic mannequins and electronic beds), increased lab and office spaces and a dedicated student area.

At a March 9 ribbon-cutting ceremony, BU president David Docherty said the facilities will increase the number of psychiatric nursing graduates, which are needed throughout the province due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People are struggling all over, and they need those kinds of outlets. They need that help,” Docherty said from the Rice Centre building on the Portage Avenue campus. “So, when the province called and said ‘we need your help,’ we said ‘we’re there.’”

Dean of health studies Linda Ross, who was at the ceremony, said the province agreed to help fund the $2.1-million expansion since the annual intake into the psychiatric nursing program had increased from 45 students to 60 in recent years.

“As we move forward, the future of psychiatric nursing education, and also the future of the profession of psychiatric nursing in Manitoba, is very, very bright,” Ross said, alluding to the new interior design of the space that allows for more natural light.

The renovations were completed in September following a quick seven-month construction, BU told the Sun on Friday.

Although supply chain issues made acquiring desks and chairs to fill the area more difficult, the new furniture has since arrived to complete the space and allow nursing students to take advantage of everything the university has to offer in Winnipeg.

“These are the days that remind us why this is our calling — to be able to provide trained experts who will be able to go out and help people in society who need that help, in every walk of life,” Docherty said in the release.
