Trio of girls charged

Three girls have been charged in connection with a break-in at a city business Wednesday evening.

Brandon police say they responded to an alarm at a business on the 500 block of First Street around 11 p.m. and learned three suspects had broken a window to get in and several items were stolen.

The three suspects were found hiding in a nearby yard and were arrested, police said. The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to the business.

The suspects — 17, 14 and 12 years old — were released to their caregivers and will appear in court on June 13 on charges of break, enter and theft.

Concealed weapon

A man who was caught with a knife after harassing employees at a city business will be released to appear in court in June, city police say.

Police say they were called to a business on the 1500 block of 18th Street around 5 p.m. Wednesday to deal with a man who had been banned from the premises. The man had become aggressive with employees and refused to leave.

As a result, officers arrested a 30-year-old man who was found with the knife. He was held at the Brandon police station, but was expected to be released to appear in court on June 5 to face charges of carrying a concealed weapon and causing a disturbance by loitering in public.

Breaching court orders

Three men were arrested for allegedly breaching court orders during three separate incidents in less than 18 hours.

First, at 9 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of man standing in traffic at the corner of 10th Street and Richmond Avenue. Police say the 24-year-old was wanted for failing to comply with probation, and he was arrested and held pending a court appearance on Thursday.

In a separate incident four hours later, police encountered a man who was carrying a baton in the 800 block of Pacific Avenue. Police say the individual was on a court order not to possess any weapons, so the 32-year-old was arrested and held at the Brandon police station to appear in court later.

Finally, around 2 a.m. Thursday, police came across a pedestrian who was in breach of a curfew order. He too was lodged at the police station to appear in court on Thursday, in his case to face a charge of failing to comply with an undertaking.

Fresh Air Fitness returns Tuesday

The City of Brandon’s Fresh Air Fitness program returns Tuesday.

First introduced in 2021, the program offers outdoor activities to residents at various locations around town in April, May and June.

This year’s programming will include events co-organized by community groups like the Brandon Racquetball Association, the Brandon Pétanque Club, the Brandon Pickleball Club and ParticiPACTION.

Activities will include aquafit, basketball, beach volleyball, dodgeball, disc golf, pétanque, pickleball, racquetball, yoga and Zumba.

While no registration is required, each session has limited spots available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants younger than 12 years old require adult supervision.

Activities will take place Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m.

Joint ward meeting next week

A trio of city councillors will be co-hosting a ward meeting for constituents next week.

Councillors Bruce Luebke (Ward 6), Jason Splett (Ward 8) and Tyson Tame (Ward 10) invite their constituents to the Riverview Curling Club at 420 Maryland Ave. starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Possible discussion topics include the southeast drainage project, the southwest lift station program, the under-construction outdoor sports complex, the proposed outdoor aquatic complex and traffic safety issues.

Members of city staff and administration will be on hand to answer questions.

Westman Lumber donates supplies to ACC

Westman Lumber Supply is partnering with Assiniboine Community College to provide students with much-needed training resources.

This week, ACC and Westman Lumber announced they have agreed for the latter to provide all the resources needed for the students to build sheds as part of their coursework at the North Hill campus.

Westman Lumber will also appraise the labour performed by the students as they construct their sheds in the coming weeks and contribute an equivalent amount as a donation to the Assiniboine Foundation.

“This sort of experience is invaluable for our students. The skills and confidence they’ll gain working on a real-life project like this will be a major benefit to them as they enter the industry,” dean of trades Kevin Poirier said.

“We value our connection to industry members, which allow partnerships like this to take shape. Thanks to Westman Lumber for helping to bring this exceptional student experience to life.”

Westman Lumber Supply is owned by Keller Development, whose owner, Evan Keller, is an ACC graduate and sits on the alumni association’s board of directors.
