Help sought for pollinator garden

The City of Brandon is looking for some worker bees to help create a pollinator garden intended to rejuvenate Eleanor Kidd Park.

The city issued a press release Thursday calling for volunteer nature and garden enthusiasts. It announced that it is working with Bee City Brandon to establish the pollinator garden. It’s hoped the park will become a “meeting place for pollinators, plants and people,” the city stated.

Eleanor Kidd Park was created in 1977 and Eleanor Kidd Gardens in 2002. However, the park was hit by heavy flooding in 2011 and 2014 and hasn’t been used since then.

Bee City Brandon chair Sherry Punak-Murphy said Brandon is the first city in Manitoba designated by Bee City Canada. The mandate for being a Bee City is to teach the public about native pollinators and run a habitat or habitat restoration activity each year.

This first Pollinator Garden Project will span five years, the city said, with the focus for the first year being cleanup of the area, establishing access by foot and the creation of soil suitable for native plants.

Stolen vehicle recovered

Two people from British Columbia were arrested Wednesday while driving a stolen vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway, east of First Street.

A 29-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were driving the Ford F-150, which was reported stolen out of British Columbia. Both occupants were arrested on charges of possession of property obtained by crime.

Concealed weapon

A 43-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly became combative with security guards at The Town Centre.

The man had allegedly been sleeping in the food court around 9 a.m. Wednesday and security guards asked him to leave. When police arrested the man, they found a large butcher knife and a second knife in his possession.

He was charged with possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and failure to comply with probation.

Mischief to property

An intoxicated man was arrested for mischief to property after causing damage to a business on the first block of 10th Street.

After responding to an alarm at the business Wednesday night, officers found that an intoxicated man was causing a disturbance and caused damage to the property.

The 22-year-old was arrested for mischief to property and also received a fine under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.

Arrest warrant

A false alarm led to the arrest of a man who was in possession of a stolen debit card early Thursday morning.

Around 2 a.m., police responded to a business alarm at a business on the 1600 block of 18th Street. Though it was a false alarm, while police were there, they found a man in the area who was wanted on outstanding charges.

A search after his arrest revealed a stolen debit card.

He was charged with failing to appear in court and possession of property obtained by crime.
