Five Assiniboine Community College students are headed back to Winnipeg next month to take part in the upcoming Skills Canada contest, having earned the right to compete on this national stage following their gold medal performances at Skills Manitoba 2023.
The group of ACC trades and technology students includes Albert Simpson (automobile technology), Hailey Burghart (electrical installations), Braxton Yurkiw (welding), Dreyson Potter (mechanical engineering) and Krinal Pate (web technologies).
“Watching them showcase their skills and abilities while honing in on their craft is impressive to watch,” ACC dean of trades Kevin Poirier said in a Friday news release. “We congratulate our students, who have all done so well in displaying their skills, along with the coaches who mentor them.”
This year’s Manitoba Skills competition took place earlier this month at various sites throughout Winnipeg, where high school and post-secondary students got to compete in more than 40 different hands-on contests.
Of the 16 ACC students who participated in the event, nine won medals, including Reid Jonasson (silver, precision machining), Preston Berry (silver, IT network systems administration), Alex Bisson (bronze, precision machining) and David Xu (bronze, web technologies).
“It is a nice experience to meet new people from the same industry, and seeing each other work is really inspiring,” Patel said in Friday’s release. “It has also inspired me to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in web design, using cutting-edge tools and technologies to deliver even more innovative and engaging user experiences.”
The 2023 Skills Canada competition is scheduled to take place at Winnipeg’s RBC Convention Centre May 25-26.
