Summer Fair tickets on sale
Tickets for the 2023 Manitoba Summer Fair in Brandon are now on sale.
This year’s fair will be held June 7-11.
Tickets can be found at provincialexhibition.com and both Co-op food stores in Minnedosa and Brandon.
Pay One Price tickets cover gate admission and a full day of midway rides. Free children’s general admission passes, courtesy of Heritage Co-op, will be available online until June 6.
General admission tickets at the gate this year will be $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under.
In addition to the midway, which will feature several new and exciting rides such as X-Drive, the Wave Swinger and Tea Cups (Kiddieland), this year’s fair will include a children’s entertainment stage featuring a variety of attractions, from Doodles the Clown to magic shows and D. VonHouligan’s Circus Show.
Residents asked to report potholes
With spring weather finally here, the City of Brandon announced Monday it is starting its annual temporary pothole patching program.
When the weather is more consistently warm, the city will engage in more permanent patching.
In the meantime, the city encourages residents to report problem potholes by calling the 24-hour pothole hotline at 204-729-2200 or by submitting an online report at brandon.ca/report-an-issue.
Residents are reminded that roads making up parts of highways — Victoria Avenue west of First Street, Richmond Avenue east of 18th Street, as well as First Street and 18th Street — are under provincial jurisdiction and not part of the city’s pothole program. Those potholes can be reported by calling 1-866-626-4862.
The program also does not apply to aprons approaching private driveways or the accesses or parking lots of private businesses.
City names new economic development director
The City of Brandon has hired Gerald Cathcart as its next director of economic development.
Cathcart returns to the municipality after previously holding the position of business development specialist from 2007 to 2014, according to a release issued by the city Monday.
More recently, Cathcart served as director of community development at Assiniboine Community College.
“Brandon has much to offer including opportunities for existing business to expand and new business to call us home,” Cathcart said in the release. “Working closely with community partners, understanding any barriers to growth will be a priority.”
City manager Ron Bowles said the city must work together with local partners to build the economy.
“Nowadays, economic development is much more holistic than strictly jobs and taxes, encompassing our educational institutes, government agencies, Indigenous peoples, newcomers, events, supply chains, and developers,” Bowles said in the release.
“The diversity of Brandon’s economy across multiple sectors provides many opportunities for collaboration. We work with them all.”

At around 7:50 p.m., RCMP responded to a stabbing at a home on Government Road in Virden.
The victims, a 50-year-old female and a 51-year-old man, were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Dental pick incident nets court date
A 39-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly attempting to stab a person with a dental pick Sunday afternoon.
Police responded to the incident around 2:15 p.m., which had occurred at a home on 23rd Street North.
The woman will appear in court on June 22.
Mischief to property
A 17-year-old girl was charged after allegedly damaging property in a home while intoxicated early Monday morning.
Police attended to the home in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue around 1:20 a.m. to find the woman had allegedly damaged electronics during an argument in the home.
She will appear in court on June 27.
Police looking for suspects
Police have not found the suspects who allegedly started a fire in a field in the 1700 block of 10th Street on Sunday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m., police responded to the location after they were informed that three men had started a fire in the field. Apparently, the suspects walked away and started another fire in the same field. The suspects left the area before police arrived.
Police say they conducted an extensive search but could not find the suspects.
