CLEARWATER RIVER, Sask. – Communities in northwestern Saskatchewan are under evacuation orders as wildfires burn nearby.
The Northern Village of La Loche says the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has recommended anyone living within the municipality leave immediately because of potential danger to life and health.
The village declared a state of local emergency earlier today because of multiple fires and dry, windy conditions.
A mandatory evacuation is also place for residents of the nearby Clearwater River Dene Nation.
Chief Teddy Clark ordered an evacuation Wednesday night, asking people to relocate to Meadow Lake or Lloydminster.
Daryl Wright, the emergency response plan co-ordinator for Meadow Lake, says at least 150 people have been relocated out of the Clearwater River Dene Nation.
Wright says the biggest hurdle is the frozen lake by the community, limiting its ability to douse the fire.
He says fire crews are using helicopters and water tanks and manually filling the water tanks.
