Ward 9 meeting tonight

Ward 9 residents are invited to discuss issues affecting their neighbourhood with city representatives at a ward meeting tonight.

Coun. Glen Parker invites his constituents to come to East End Community Centre at 405 Park St. starting at 7 p.m.

Topics of discussion could include the future of the Sportsplex, the possible creation of an outdoor aquatics facility, the creation of a police cadets program and speeding along Park Street.

Manitoba launches water-testing subsidy

Owners of private wells and cisterns in flood-affected parts of Manitoba can access a water-testing subsidy from the provincial government under a new program announced Monday.

Until Aug. 31, Manitoba will pay for eligible water testing performed at Horizon Lab in Winnipeg to ensure sources have not been compromised by waterborne illness.

“Public health encourages everyone with a private water system that has been affected by flooding to test their water once floodwaters recede to ensure their drinking water is safe during a season of elevated risk,” chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said in a statement.

“Preventing the risk of waterborne disease is important, and the province wants well and cistern owners to take steps to protect themselves.”

Those concerned their well or cistern has been affected by floodwaters should boil drinking water for use and have their water tested for bacteria before resuming normal habits.

UCT bingo offers $60K jackpot

The United Commercial Travellers (UCT) of Brandon is celebrating its 60th anniversary by offering a bingo jackpot of $60,000 this Saturday.

The first numbers were called at UCT’s TRAVO Bingo in May 1963 at the Wheat City Arena, located on the corner of Victoria Avenue and 10th Street, which is now the home of the Brandon Police Service.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for community projects in the area with the focus on youth, safety, cancer awareness and those with intellectual disabilities.

Some of the organizations that have benefited from UCT include the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex, Brandon’s Christmas Cheer and the UCT Traveller’s Day Parade, which takes place during the Manitoba Summer Fair.

Saturday’s $60,000 jackpot will be held in the Manitoba Room at the Keystone Centre. Doors open at 9 a.m., early bird games start at noon, with regular games at 1:30 p.m.

IIU investigates Brandon police

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the Brandon Police Service for an incident related to the arrest of a man earlier this month.

The Independent Investigation Unit has launched an investigation into a complaint from a man who claims he was assaulted by BPS officers during his arrest.

The man was arrested in the early morning hours on May 3, when an individual had locked himself in a storage room and refused to leave.

According to the IIU press release, when police arrived, they observed a man exiting the room with a metal crowbar and a knife. A brief struggle ensued, and the man was arrested.

After his arrival at the cells, the man said a BPS officer assaulted him during the arrest.

The IIU investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that many assist the investigation are encouraged to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.

Break-in at business

A 28-year-old man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a Seventh Street business through a window.

At around 4:45 a.m. Monday, police received a report of an activated alarm at a business on the 100 block of Seventh Street. When they arrived on scene, they could see an individual inside through a window.

Police contained the business, while a member of the police service dog unit was called to search for the suspect within the large building.

The man was located in the basement and arrested.

Impaired driving arrest

A 24-year-old man was charged for allegedly driving while impaired after failing a roadside drug evaluation.

Shortly before 3 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of 11th Street after a car was observed failing to stop at a stop sign.

The vehicle was unregistered and the driver did not have a licence. Additionally, he also displayed signs of drug impairment and failed an evaluation by a drug recognition expert.

Also, the driver was also on court-ordered conditions to not have communication with his 31-year-old female passenger.

He was charged and will appear in court on July 13.

The woman was also on court-ordered conditions to not have communication with the 24-year-old driver. She was arrested on a charge of failing to comply with an undertaking.

Stolen vehicle recovered

Police have located a white 2012 GMC Sierra that had been stolen out of Winnipeg.

Officers located the car parked and unoccupied in the 400 block of 12th Street.

Meat, cheese theft

A 56-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly stealing $150 worth of meat and cheese from a business on the 900 block of Victoria Avenue on Sunday evening.

Employees told police they had witnessed a woman select grocery meat and cheese before leaving without paying.

The woman was located and arrested in the area. She will appear in court on July 4 on a charge of theft under $5,000.

Shed broken into

Police are looking for more information related to a storage shed break-in that occurred overnight on Sunday.

Suspects broke into a storage shed at a business on the 1400 block of Louise Avenue. Police say the suspect(s) may have tried to light a fire, as there was evidence of charring on the door.

Police are asking anyone with information about the break and enter to contact BPS at 204-727-2345.
