Longtime Brandon University Foundation member Gerald Butler is the latest recipient of the school’s Apex Award, which recognizes meritorious service to the school’s various fundraising efforts.
The award was handed out during the foundation’s Wednesday luncheon at Harvest Hall, where Butler spoke about his commitment to promoting higher education and cultivating an active university community on campus.
“Today, in addition to my family and career, my proudest claim is to be a small piece of the beautiful mosaic of people who personify Brandon University,” he said.
Butler’s affiliation with BU began as a student in 1958 when the school was known as Brandon College. He graduated in 1963 with a bachelor of science degree and an education certificate one year later.
After teaching for two years in Hearst, Ont., Butler returned to Brandon with his wife Carmen to carve out a career in the financial industry by working with New York Life and later Cardinal Capital Management.
Around that time, Butler rejoined Brandon College with a spot on the school’s Alumni Board and the foundation board, eventually becoming foundation president through 1987-88.
“For decades, Gerald has been the Class of 1963 reunion organizer encouraging classmates to meet at Homecoming to reconnect with each other and their alma mater,” past foundation president Dwight Conroy said during Wednesday’s luncheon. “Through all this, Gerald’s wife Carmen has been by his side and together, they are recognized as an important part of the BU family.”
In addition to working as an organizational member of the foundation, Butler has contributed to several other initiatives like the Seven Generations Scholarship, Enactus Bursaries, the McCutcheon Alcove and the Student Emergency Fund.
In the mid-2010s, Butler also raised more than $50,000 to supply BU’s Program for the Education of Native Teachers (PENT) with iPads, with the hope of better preparing students to teach in remote Indigenous communities.
Because of this campaign, Butler was also given the foundation’s Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award in 2016, with the most recent Apex Award serving as an encapsulation of his decades of work on with BU overall.
“The whole community benefits,” Butler said of his fundraising work Wednesday. “I’m so proud, speaking on behalf of our whole family, to be part of this wonderful place called Brandon University. Thank you for this honour.”
