Nominees from Minnedosa represent one-third of those up for awards at Tourism Westman’s 2023 annual Tribute to Tourism Awards Gala on June 14.
A total of 27 nominees from six Westman communities are vying for awards in nine categories.
Of those, nine are from Minnedosa, eight from Brandon, four from Carberry and two from Hamiota and another two from Souris. Killarney and Elkhorn are each represented by one nominee apiece.
Under the aspiring youth category, Sydney Murray (Hamiota), Cassandra Cardy and Zac Easton (Minnedosa), Taylor Wegener (Elkhorn) and Britteny Breemersch (Brandon) are nominated.
There are two event of the year categories — one for events with a budget of less than $5,000 and another for events with a budget higher than $5,000.
In the higher-budget category, nominees include Carberry Agricultural Fair and Races, Souris Survivor Curling Bonspiel, Manitoba Ag Days in Brandon and Hunter Brothers Concert in Killarney. The Hamiota Show ’n’ Shine Car Show, Ride Like Ole in Minnedosa and Race the North Face in Brandon are competing for the lower-budget category.
The Minnedosa Skating Club, Brandon Tourism and Trails of Toba in Brandon are the three groups nominated in the marketing excellence category.
For service excellence, Sun Sun Restaurant in Minnedosa, Souris Hotel and Summer Shack Drive Inn Restaurant in Carberry are finalists.
Two Brandon-held events were nominated under the Indigenous tourism category, one for National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations and the other for Dakota Nation Winterfest.
A pair of Minnedosa businesses represent the resilience and innovation nominees, La Bella Terra and enJoy Salon and Spa.
Tom Instance of Minnedosa, Jamie Smart of Carberry and Tony Mully of Minnedosa are finalists for volunteer of the year.
Finally, there are three nominees in the partnership category. Those are the team of Carberry Homecoming and the Carberry Chamber of Commerce, the Brandon-based team of Section 6 Brewing Co., The Dock on Princess and Kickin’ Axe and the Minnedosa Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas in the Valley event. Winners for these categories will be announced on June 14 starting at 6 p.m. at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex.
Food for the evening will be provided by Woodfire Deli, with entertainment from Bethel Road Music.
