Mounties search for armed-robbery suspect

A man armed with a sawed-off shotgun robbed a business in Keeseekoowenin First Nation late Sunday evening, Manitoba RCMP reported Wednesday.

Around 11:35 p.m. that day, police say, the man — who was wearing a black baseball hat, a grey hoodie, a face mask and carrying a single-barrelled gun — entered a business on Road 354, demanding money and cigarettes.

The suspect then left the store and is believed to have entered a pickup truck heading west onto Highway 45. No physical injuries were reported by police.

He is described as five feet, 10 inches tall with a slim build. The truck was described as a newer diesel model, dark coloured with lifted suspension, bright LED lights and excessively noisy while running.

People with information are asked to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, send a secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com or to call RCMP at 204-848-2659.

Ward 1 meeting tonight

A reminder to Ward 1 residents that a district meeting is being held tonight at the Riverbank Discovery Centre’s main foyer.

Coun. Heather Karrouze (Ward 1) and members of city administration will be on hand to talk about topics such as the intersection of 18th Street and Braecrest Drive, the future of the Sportsplex, the outdoor sports complex at the corner of First Street North and Veterans’ Way, the planned outdoor ice surface for the North Hill and community gardens.

The event begins at 7 p.m.

Assault with a weapon

Police are looking for more information in connection with an assault with a machete.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report of a victim who had been assaulted by a suspect with a machete. The victim was in the 1300 block of Fifth Street and had received a non-life-threatening cut to his arm.

According to police, the victim would not co-operate with officers when asked about details of the assault or the suspect.

He was treated and released from hospital.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the assault to contact Brandon Police Service at 204-729-2345.

Public mischief, resisting arrest

A teenager was arrested after giving a fake name to police and attempting to flee from officers Tuesday.

The 17-year-old boy was stopped in the 7000 block of 10th Street shortly before 9 p.m. He allegedly provided a fake name to avoid arrest as police learned he was wanted on outstanding charges of utter threats, resist arrest, possess weapon, fail to comply with undertaking, and fail to attend court.

When officers attempted to arrest the boy, he allegedly resisted and tried to flee.

He was caught and faces additional charges of resisting arrest and public mischief.
