A woman’s alleged dash after an unpaid taxi ride Thursday led police to discover she was also a suspect for an earlier theft.

Around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a report that a woman didn’t pay her taxi fair in the 100 block of 16th Street. After her ride, the woman went inside a home and refused to pay the fair, police allege.

According to police, the woman initially provided a fake name to officers upon her arrest. After police learned her real name, they found out she was also wanted as the suspect in a theft of power tools from a north-end business on May 9. The suspect was identified using security footage from the business.

The 30-year-old has been charged with fraudulently obtaining transportation, theft under $5,000 and public mischief.

Stolen Vehicle

City police are looking for more information about a truck that was stolen from the 3700 block of Willowdale Crescent on Thursday.

The vehicle is a 2003 White Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with licence plate number LAS 417. It has rust around the wheel wells and yellow paint on the right side of the front fender. It was taken between midnight and 4 a.m. Thursday.

BU expects more than 550 grads for convocation

Next week’s convocation ceremony at Brandon University will reportedly feature 559 graduates who will gather at the campus’ Healthy Living Centre on Thursday and Friday to celebrate their academic achievements.

The two-day convocation will be split into four ceremonies that begin Thursday morning with students representing the faculty of science and the School of Music, followed by an afternoon get-together that celebrates faculty of education graduates.

Friday’s schedule includes grads from the faculty of health studies at 10 a.m. and the faculty of arts at 2 p.m.

This year’s convocation marks the second year in a row that BU students can collect their diplomas in person, as the school’s 2020 and 2021 graduation ceremonies were previously only broadcast online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s festivities will see the introduction of a new eagle staff crafted by Indigenous artisan William Mousseau, which will be carried by BU chancellor Mary Jane McCallum to open and close the ceremonies.

For those unable to attend this year’s BU convocation in person, the ceremonies will also be live streamed at BrandonU.ca/Convocation.

4-H cleanup campaign underway

Drivers are asked to exercise caution this weekend as 4-H club members begin their annual cleanup campaign on Manitoba’s highways.

The provincewide campaign will take place today, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting.

Drivers are asked to be alert and be careful when passing 4-H highway cleanup crews. In case of rain, the alternate date for the cleanup campaign is June 3.
