Bear tries to escape police
Local police and conservation officers successfully captured a black bear that wandered into the city Saturday before releasing it back into the wild.
Authorities received a call about the bear around 10:10 p.m., with a local resident indicating they had spotted the animal near the Westridge Community Centre.
Police eventually caught up with the bear at the back of a residence on Elviss Crescent, where it attempted to evade them by climbing a tree.
The bear was safely contained following the arrival of conservation officers, who removed the animal from city limits.
Stolen property recovered
A 41-year-old man is facing theft charges after he was caught with stolen property following a Saturday afternoon heist in Brandon.
At around 1:30 p.m. local police received a report of theft from a vehicle that was parked in the 700 block of Franklin Street. The investigation led to the suspect’s home in the 100 block of 12th Street East.
Police got a search warrant and found the stolen property in the home. They arrested the 41-year-old suspect for possession of property obtained by crime.
Officers also arrested a 28-year-old woman at the scene, since she was the subject of an arrest warrant for theft, fraud and using a stolen debit card.
Both suspects were released from custody and have a court date set for July 31.
Traffic stop leads to drugs
A male motorist is facing drug trafficking charges after Brandon police pulled him over Saturday night and found meth and cocaine in his possession.
A vehicle was pulled over on the 300 block of 18th Street North around 9 p.m. Police discovered the suspect was wanted for an outstanding warrant for three counts of theft and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
During his arrest for the warrant, police searched him and found individually wrapped baggies of cocaine and a small quantity of meth.
As a result, he is being charged with being in possession of meth, being in possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and being in possession of proceeds of crime (cash).
He is scheduled to appear in court today.
The suspect’s passenger, a 31-year-old woman, was also arrested since she was violating a curfew order. She was later released from custody with a court date of July 24.
Man running into traffic
Local police detained a 26-year-old man Saturday afternoon after he was caught running into traffic near the 300 block of 13th Street.
Arriving at the scene around 2:30 p.m., police found the man intoxicated and highly-agitated. Police learned he was on a release order that forbade him from using drugs.
The 26 year old was arrested for breaching the order and is scheduled to appear in court today.
