Brandonites will have a chance to explore some of the Wheat City’s unique character buildings again this year.
The City of Brandon, Brandon Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, and their community partners are getting ready to launch the 21st annual Doors Open Brandon weekend. The event kicks off with a guided bus tour on July 14, followed by specialty walking tours and self-guided tours on July 15 and 16.
“Overall, this is a wonderful opportunity to get out in the community and learn about Brandon’s rich heritage,” said Esosa Omoarukhe, the city’s heritage marketing co-ordinator.

This year’s lineup of 12 properties includes a mix of private and public ownership, as well as museums. Though the properties have been renovated and revitalized, many have kept their traditional charm.
Specialty walking tours include nature walks through the Assiniboine Food Forest, a tour of downtown as well as an Indigenous event.
The guided bus tour will take guests through Brandon’s secret gardens and heritage spots. Omoarukhe encourages those who are interested in the bus tour to purchase tickets soon, as space on the bus is limited.
The event will also host a social media challenge this year where participants can tag the city on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to enter a draw.
Live music and refreshments will be provided at the Daly House Museum.
“Not only are there returning locations, such as the history-making water reclamation facility after a few years’ absence, but there are also new tour options this year, like the grounds at the Riverbank Discovery Centre,” Omoarukhe said.
Omoarukhe also added that the event is still looking for volunteers and says that anyone interested in volunteering can register using a link on the Heritage Brandon website. She encourages everyone of all ages to come out to the event to learn more about Brandon’s history and heritage.
Complete information on the event will be available on the Heritage Brandon website on June 20.
Event booklets will also be available for pickup starting June 26 at various locations around town, including city hall, the Riverbank Discovery Centre, Sobeys West, Heritage Co-op and the Brandon Public Library.
