Westman residents celebrated this week’s summer solstice by taking part in a downtown block party on Friday, which was a joint venture between local businesses Section 6 Brewing, The Dock on Princess and Kickin’ Axe Throwing.
The inaugural event ran from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. along a blocked-off section of Princess Avenue and featured live music, vendors and a variety of activities to help celebrate the longest day of the year, which actually took place on Wednesday.
Section 6 taproom manager Kate Hill told the Sun that the genesis for this Summer Soulstice Block Party came from her time working at an art gallery in North Carolina, where they would organize a similar celebration every year.
After moving to Brandon in 2014, Hill noticed that no such event was available in the area and finally decided to pull the trigger on a block party this summer with the help from The Dock, Kickin’ Axe and the Brandon Downtown Development Corporation.
“At the end of the day, what I really want is to show people that there is a space for them to come hang out downtown, to have a good time and to enjoy themselves and feel comfortable,” Hill said.
The lineup of musicians for Friday’s block party included Aaron Frost, Christina Thorne, Amber Solomon, Faye Desjarlais, Bruce Dunlop, Beauty and the Beard, Julianna Moore, the Wheat City Jug Band, Sons of Eve and Hansel.
