Police catch up to driver

A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly driving away from police while impaired early Wednesday morning.

Around 1 a.m., police attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of First Street and Park Avenue. However, the driver did not stop or pull over and instead accelerated away from police.

Police say that they did not pursue the vehicle.

When the vehicle reached First Street and Richmond Avenue, he lost control and drove the vehicle into the ditch in the 1500 block of First Street.

Apparently, the driver then tried to run from the vehicle, but police stopped him a short distance away.

He was charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit, driving while ability impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.

Double dine-and-dash

Police arrested two people on Tuesday for unrelated incidents of allegedly leaving restaurants without paying for their meals earlier this month.

The first arrest was a 22-year-old man who allegedly left a restaurant on the 800 block of Princess Avenue without paying for his $50 meal on July 9.

Security footage helped police in identifying the man.

He will appear in court on Sept. 7 on a charge of fraudulently obtaining food.

The second arrest was of a 33-year-old man who allegedly left a restaurant on the 1500 block of 18th Street without paying for his $32 meal on July 8.

He was also arrested on Tuesday after police learned his identity.

He will appear in court on Aug. 24 on a charge of fraudulently obtaining food.

Cocaine-trafficking arrest

RCMP arrested a 26-year-old man in Boissevain for cocaine trafficking on Friday.

The Manitoba RCMP West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team and Turtle Mountain RCMP executed an arrest warrant at a residence on Aikman Street in Boissevain on Friday around 5:30 p.m.

As a result of the search, police seized cocaine, currency from the proceeds of trafficking and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

The 26-year-old was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession of proceeds of crime and resisting arrest.

He has been released from custody.

RCMP say that the investigation continues.
