FORTY YEARS AGO

An emergency landing of an Air Canada Boeing 767 was made on an abandoned runway in Gimli yesterday. Only one woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries. It is believed the plane had run out of fuel.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced Tuesday that 52 producers will receive the first round of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) compensation cheques, but as of Wednesday afternoon, Manitoba Crop Insurance Special Projects Manager Allan Steinke was still unable to write them out.

Westman farmers have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, which is displayed at the Keystone Centre. The late Ernest Hugh McCausland of Boissevain and Douglas Allan Smith of Oak Lake, are two of this year’s seven inductees.

TEN YEARS AGO

A pawn shop owner whose Google research led him astray and imported prohibited weapons into Canada as Christmas gifts has been handed a jail sentence, although he’ll serve it a couple of days at a time. It doesn’t matter whether the man imported the weapons as gifts or not, Judge Donovan Dvorak said during sentencing. What matters is that the weapons pose a risk to the public, the judge said.

Canupawakpa Dakota Nation Chief Frank Brown hopes police will be able to track down the “firebug” responsible for setting two houses, a church and three band vehicles ablaze this month. Just after midnight on July 13, a vacant house was “burned to the ground” and three older band vehicles “destroyed,” two of which were parked near the community’s gaming centre and the other near the fire hall, Brown said. The blazes came only a week after a house burnt down on the evening of July 5 and a church caught fire early the next morning.
