10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout July will feature Story and Song Circle with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

3:30 to 6 p.m. — Heritage Co-op Marketplace (1035 Richmond Ave.) is hosting a barbecue and car show. Show vehicles can park in the northeast corner of the parking lot. Open to all. All sales from the barbecue donated to the pediatric ward at Brandon Regional Health Centre. Sponsored by Heritage Co-op Marketplace, Brandon and Memory Lane car club. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. — A Summer Multicultural Celebration will be held at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. The event hopes to pave the way to re-establish the three-day Westman Multicultural Festival, which has not been held since 2020. Groups representing Métis, Ukraine, India, Ireland, Scotland, Jamaica, Philippines, Mexico and El Salvador will be doing cultural performances twice daily. There will be six food vendors, entertainment and booths.

1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, and $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

7 p.m. — Lawn bowling at Stanley Park (15th Street and Princess Avenue) takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until September. Bowls and instructions provided. Try it for free. Join us for fun and light exercise.

TUESDAY

6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday from June through August. This week features Allen McColl. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

9 a.m. — The 2023 Canadian High School Rodeo Finals will be held at the Keystone Centre today through to Aug. 5. Roughly 350 contestants in Grades 5 to 12 from across the country will be competing for the Canadian title. Gate admission is $10 or $20 for a weekend pass. Programs are available for $10.

1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

6 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. All skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Friday features School’s Out for Summer Party with DJ Chaz. $10 cover. On Saturday, join us for the Hot Goth Summer Tour with The Fixer (Thunder Bay), Teknosis (Dryden) and Brandon’s own local rockers Numbskull. Doors open at 9 p.m.; music at 10 p.m. These are both 18-plus events and photo ID is required.

The Guinness Tavern by The Double Decker (943 Rosser Ave.) — Join us on Saturday for back to back parties! Vertigo, live unplugged at 9 p.m. with some acoustic jams. Free entry. Then at 11 p.m. it is a Latin party with DJ Spanglish. $10 entry.

Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — On Friday come for some easy listening acoustic covers with Faye Desjarlais from 6-7:30 p.m. Then from 9-11 p.m. Lost in Unison takes to the stage with some classic rock. Tickets are $10.

Sand Hills Casino (777 Sand Hill Dr., Carberry) — Join us for a weekend of ’80s pop and party rock on Friday and Saturday with Rockalypso. Live and free.

Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon) — Free music Fridays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Come check us out!

Section 6 Brew Company ( 1126 Princess Ave.) — Live music on Friday with The Mood Agents at 6 p.m.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF members who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site. For July and August: Ace Academy, a virtual reality exhibit. Come fly a Second World War biplane included in your admission.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are admitted free. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — “A contemporary art gallery, school, and shop that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Summer hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. Guided tours and visits are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission by donation. Booking in advance is strongly recommended. Phone 204-717-1514 or email bgmainfo@wcgwave.ca.

26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Aug. 3-5 — The 2023 Canadian High School Rodeo Finals continue at the Keystone Centre. Roughly 350 contestants in Grades 5 to 12 from across the country will be competing for the Canadian title. Gate admission is $10 or $20 for a weekend pass. Programs are available for $10.

Aug. 4-6 — Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival returns to Selo Ukraina (10 km south of Dauphin). The 58th annual festival features a great variety of performers with bands from across the Prairies and dance groups from across the country. There will also be plenty of food, drink vendors and many merchant booths. For tickets, camping and a list of performers and food vendors visit cnuf.ca.

Aug. 4-6 — Canada’s premier classic rock festival, Rockin’ The Fields of Minnedosa, returns this August long weekend with loads of entertainment. Friday’s main stage lineup: Killer Dwarfs, Kick Axe, L.A. Guns and Sebastian Bach. Saturday: Battle of the Bands winner; Sloan, Default, Sheepdogs, and Glorious Sons. Sunday: Nick Glider, Toronto, Aldo Nova and Lou Gramm. Tickets and camping are available online at rockinthefields.ca or by calling 1-800-330-8333.

Aug. 5-6 — Friends of Riding Mountain National Park annual used book sale will take place at the Friends of RMNP Learning Centre (154 Columbine St.). Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Includes books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and puzzles. All monies collected go to support our children’s education programs. Book donations always appreciated.

Aug. 10-12 — Route 10 Collective, a collection of Clear Lake area musicians, will be performing at the Onanole Rec Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. In honour of the 50th anniversary of some of rock’s most seminal albums, the Route 10 Collective is presenting “1973: A mix tape,” playing some of 1973’s greatest music. “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Band On the Run” will be featured, as well as deep cuts for the ears of the true aficionados. Advance tickets are available at Poor Michael’s Emporium in Onanole 204-848-0336 for $30 (cash only).

Aug. 11 — The Virden Pioneer Home Museum’s 2023 Museum Day and barbecue is fast approaching. Come out to see us at 390 King St. W. in Virden for burgers and hot dogs, activities and games for the whole family and toonie tours of the museum! Activities start at 11:30 a.m. Barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Toonie tours available all day.

Aug. 11-13 — Brandon’s Ribfest, presented by the Brandon Sunset Rotary, returns to the Riverbank Discovery Centre. This three-day event features the best in barbecue ribs as well as chicken, sausages, pulled pork and a number of accompanying side dishes. Beer tent, live music and a kids zone will also be on site. Admission is free. Hours: Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Aug. 12-13 — Southview Flea Market and Market Garden (Eastern Access 110 and 17th Street East across from the Humane Society) is back for another season! Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event. Aug. 17 — Jet Stream will take to the Fusion Credit Union stage at the Riverbank Discovery Centre at 6:30 p.m. Globally renowned from Iqaliut to Las Vegas to Busan, South Korea, this group plays classic and contemporary rock, pop and country hits.

Aug. 17-20 — Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze will be held throughout the town of Virden as well as the Tundra Oil and Gas Place. Nightly rodeo performances Friday to Sunday; 3D barrel racing, barn bar, live entertainment, kids’ zone, Daze dance, demolition derby and much more. For more information, visit virdenindoorrodeo.ca.

Aug. 19 — Props & Hops Beer Tasting event will be held at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum from 6-9 p.m. Participating brewers include Black Wheat, Farmery, Section 6, Trans Canada and Barn Hammer. Aug. 19 — The Wawanesa Children’s Fair will be held at the Wawanesa Recreation Grounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This fair is free for all to attend thanks to generous community sponsors. There will be a charge for food from the canteen. Come to see the reptiles, trucks, play games, run races, bouncy castles and ride on wagons among many other events like sumo wrestling and face painting. Everyone welcome.

Aug. 19 — Come out and join us for the much-awaited return of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival! This year we join the global celebrations honouring the double anniversary of the legendary composer and pianist Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), commemorating 150 years since his birth and 80 years since his passing. On Aug. 19: “Soirée Rachmaninoff” will take place on opening night in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at the Brandon University School of Music at 7:30 p.m. featuring well-known father-son pianists Alexander and Daniel Tselyakov. Tickets: $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Seniors/students $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Aug. 25-27 — The 2023 Morden Corn and Apple Festival, Manitoba’s largest street festival, returns for the last weekend in August. Come out for some free hot, buttered corn on the cob, apple juice, parade, children’s activities and more than 200 vendors selling everything from delicious food to gorgeous handmade goods. Entertainment headliners include Sloan with special guests Econoline Crush. More information can be found on the festival website cornandapple.om. It’s free, it’s fun, it’s for everyone!

Sept. 7-9 — The Rotary fall book sale will take place in the Imperial Ballroom at the Victoria Inn. Free book for every child! Something for everyone. Free admission. Please bring your own reusable shopping bags. Sept. 7-8 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
