WINNIPEG — Federal RCMP weapons investigators and officers from the Killarney detachment seized 121 firearms from a home in Wawanesa last month.
RCMP displayed the seized guns stacked on tables at provincial headquarters on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg on Tuesday morning.
Manitoba RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre said the accused, a 38-year-old man, held a valid restricted possession and acquisition licence, allowing him to legally own some of the seized weapons.
On July 20, RCMP seized 121 firearms, several thousand rounds of ammunition, numerous magazines, three sets of body armour, and various firearms manufacturing paraphernalia from a home in Wawanesa. (Mike Thiessen/Winnipeg Free Press)
However, Manaigre said, national weapons enforcement officers in Winnipeg had received intelligence indicating many of the firearms were being improperly stored, as well as concerns about the types and number of them, which led them to obtain the search warrant executed on July 20.
Manaigre said it appears the accused was a firearms collector.
“He wanted to collect numerous firearms of various types,” he said. “Some of the stuff is not legal in Canada.”
Manaigre said RCMP seized the entire collection because of the “sheer amount” that were improperly stored — non-restricted firearms need to be kept unloaded, with the trigger locked or the weapon disassembled.
“These firearms cannot be just strewn throughout a residence,” he told reporters.
RCMP also seized several thousand rounds of ammunition, loaded magazines and three sets of body armour, as well as firearms-manufacturing equipment.
Mounties said of the weapons seized, 62 were long guns and 55 were handguns. Fifty-three were non-restricted, 53 restricted and four prohibited but were purchased when it was legal to do so. Officers also seized a functioning cannon, built in 1927.
Six of the weapons were antiques, and five were firearm receivers (frames).
The 38-year-old man, who was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court, will be charged with unsafe storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm at an unauthorized place and losing a firearm.
Mounties said they may lay additional charges once the whole collection is analyzed. Manaigre said a court hearing will also determine whether the accused, whose name has not been released, will be able to keep his firearms licence.
