The Daly Overpass, which was closed to traffic earlier on Thursday morning due to a train derailment, has been reopened.
This was confirmed in a statement shared with the media by City of Brandon corporate communication officer Merrilea Metcalf today.
“The bridge was closed to traffic while damage to the current bridge was assessed by the Province of Manitoba. At approximately 11 a.m., the assessment was completed and the Daly Overpass is now again re-opened to traffic,” Metcalf stated.
Early on Thursday, The Sun reported that a train derailment led to the temporary closure of both north and southbound lanes of 18th Street at the Daly overpass.
Brandon Police were advised at about 1:45 a.m. today of a train derailment under the Daly Overpass in Brandon. Four Canadian Pacific railway cars left the track and at least one of the cars struck a concrete support of the overpass.
Police said the support had sustained some visible damage and efforts to determine if its strength and safety have been compromised are underway. In a press release this morning, the police stated that the cars were not carrying any hazardous goods.
As a result, both north and southbound lanes of 18th Street were closed until an accurate assessment of its safety was completed.
