Brandon’s chance for an American air link appears to have died with its suitor’s plans to cut service to Bismarck and Minot, N.D. Continental Airlines said it will eliminate 2,500 full-time jobs and discontinue service in nine cities after losing more than $24 million since emerging from bankruptcy in April.
A seven-month lockout at The Brandon Club has ended with a payout. Union and club officials confirmed an agreement had been made to terminate the labour dispute in exchange for a cash payment.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
No more teletheatre horse racing will be shown at the Trails West Motor Inn.“We’re expanding and we just don’t have the space for it anymore,” says owner and manager Heidi Howarth. Since 1989, patrons have watched Assiniboia Downs racing via satellite on giant television screens in the restaurant and lounge area. Thoroughbred and harness racing from Winnipeg and other Canadian tracks were featured, along with derby races from the United States. Howarth says as satellite TV has become more available, some patrons have started watching it at home instead of coming to the hotel.
TEN YEARS AGO
A provincial plan to redevelop the Trans-Canada Highway has left Deer Ridge Golf Course in limbo for more than a decade, according to owner Chris Kading, who says he is still waiting to negotiate a settlement with the province that was first discussed in 2002, when the Functional Design Study of P.T.H. 1 West was approved.
Playing basketball with a group of men in the current YMCA gym for the final time, Will Majcher wasn’t holding on to any sentimental memories. “It’s just a building. Anybody who has any memories will still have their memories,” he said. “Everything has its life expectancy, and this one has outgrown its time.” The Eighth Street building shut its doors at the regular 10 p.m. closing time last night on the final day of being open for public use.
