Sobeys West undergoing extensive renovation

In a bid to enhance its shopping experience and align with evolving community needs, Sobeys West has embarked on a renovation project.

Shoppers are likely to witness an update to the store’s facade, as several departments — including meats, bakery, produce, dairy, grocery, deli and kitchen — are slated to receive significant upgrades. Additionally, the renovation project will include a range of environmental and sustainability enhancements, primarily focusing on lighting and refrigeration systems.

“As part of our routine business evaluation, these renovations exemplify our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our community. While we’re not disclosing specific renovation details currently, we eagerly anticipate revealing the enhanced facilities and services to the public upon completion,” a Sobeys West spokesperson stated when reached for comment regarding the specifics of the renovation.

Among the pleased customers voicing their excitement on social media was Howard Berg, who exclaimed, “Excited for y’all! Best grocery store in Brandon, I must say!” Amanda Wright also chimed in, envisioning the store’s future, saying: “It will look great when it’s complete.”

“The renovations done to our facility are all based on the tenants that we signed, we did a general upgrade of the building about four years ago,” said Landstar Developments CEO Mark Olson, owner of WestVic Common, the development that houses Sobeys West. “And the further renovations really are (determined) by who we sign as for the site, so that will determine what additional renovations we did to the building.

“We’re extremely happy with how things are going along and that we’re finally getting some traction after COVID, and we’re excited to see what this turns out to be,” Olson added.

In response to inquiries about permits and the ongoing work, City of Brandon corporate communications officer Merrilea Metcalf said: “We can confirm that Sobeys does have a permit for the work being carried out at their location at 3409 Victoria Ave.”

As a kickoff to this renovation endeavour, Sobeys West offered a construction sale on Aug. 29, with a generous 50 per cent discount on select grocery and health and beauty items.

Sobeys West also took to social media, announcing: “It has begun! Over the next 29 weeks, the store will undergo a transformation. Outside will see a dramatic update. There will be a number of environmental/sustainability upgrades related to lighting and refrigeration. From top to bottom, we’ll look and feel different! What won’t change … Our great staff and our commitment to the community!”
