For the first time in four years, Brandon University’s Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music has a new director, with pianist and composer Dianna Neufeld taking the reins from Everett Hopfner.

BU officials announced this new appointment in a Friday news release, with Neufeld herself stating that she’s looking forward to facilitating deep “community building” through her new leadership role.

This strategy would involve bringing teachers and students from Brandon and the surrounding Westman region together through satellite programs to create accessible music learning spaces for all abilities and cultures.

“One of the best things about music is how it always leaves room to grow, to invent and to evolve,” Neufeld stated in Friday’s release. “I’m excited to welcome the community to an inviting musical experience with our wonderful faculty.”

Neufeld is no stranger to the Westman music community, having taught at the conservatory for many years and served as the president of the Brandon and Westman branch of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers Association.

Her administrative work includes a run as the administrator of the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, which normally attracts participants from across the country.

Neufeld has also made her mark in the industry as a performer, having recently played internationally at the 2022 “Musiktage am Rhein” festival in Germany and worked as a collaborative pianist alongside American violinist Sean Riley.

She has also written compositions for all levels of learners that can be found in the Northern Lights CNCM Piano Repertoire books.

Throughout the last couple years, Neufeld hasn’t neglected her own education, completing a Master of Music, Performance and Literature at BU’s School of Music in 2022.

Because of all these qualities, BU School of Music dean Greg Gatien believes that Neufeld will be a worthy successor to the “exemplary leadership” that has come before her at the conservatory.

“Her musical ability and experience, along with her commitment to sharing both the technical and the emotional aspects of performance, will put our conservatory students in good hands,” Gatien said in Friday’s release.

The Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music is designed to complement BU’s School of Music by offering music lessons to people not currently enrolled at the university, from children to senior citizens.
