Wag-A-Tail marks 20 years

The Brandon Humane Society is gearing up for its 20th Annual Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon, set to take place on Sunday.

This milestone event promises to be a celebration of two decades of support for this no-kill animal shelter in Brandon.

“It’s our 20th year,” Brandon Humane Society executive director/manager Tracy Munn said. “And it’s huge because a lot of people think we’re funded differently, like we get city or government funding. So, we don’t get that; we’re at the mercy of amazing people, not only in our community but surrounding communities, even from other provinces sometimes, that love animals and want to help.

“You won’t find a lot of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals across Canada that are no-kill, and we are no-kill. So that means our animals would live here till the end of their days,” Munn said. “But as you know, our animals aren’t locked up in kennels. They sleep in their kennel at night. They go in at naptime, usually about 3:30 in the afternoon for a couple of hours, but they’re out running and playing and enjoying life.”

The Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon, an essential fundraiser for the shelter, has grown significantly over the years. The annual event has played a crucial role in supporting the shelter’s mission.

“I think the first year we made $19,000, and slowly it’s grown and grown,” Munn said. “Last year, we raised over $40,000. This year, due to staff shortages and other challenges, we might not do as well, but our commitment to the animals remains unwavering.”

When asked about the specific use of the funds raised through the Walk-A-Thon, Munn provided insight into the shelter’s needs.

“Our money goes to the animals,” she said. “Sometimes there are expensive surgeries, expensive vet care, or food costs. Our water costs $25,000 a year, and we have a septic system and a holding tank that costs another $25,000 a year. So it’s very, very expensive. But we’re dedicated to providing the best care for these animals.”

This year’s Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon will see a change in venue.

“We had it at Kin Park for many years, but last year, we tried the riverbank again. However, everybody liked it at Kin Park, so we’re back here,” Munn said. “This space offers a more open area for the walk, and it’s central, making it accessible for attendees.”

Reflecting on the event’s history, Munn highlighted its importance.

“A lot of people say, ‘You just keep on going,’” she noted. “I’ve thought about doing different things to add new elements and bring in more supporters. Maybe even a car show alongside the event to attract a different crowd. Regardless, our commitment to helping animals remains unchanged.”
