Three men have been charged with murder in the killing of a man whose remains were found on the outskirts of Brandon last fall.
RCMP arrested the men Monday for the slaying of James Vernon Giesbrecht in October, the police agency said at a news conference Tuesday.
Joseph Lindsay, 36, was arrested at Stony Mountain Institution and charged with first-degree murder. Redstone Wombdiska, 28, was arrested at the Headingley Correctional Centre and charged with first-degree murder. Christopher Cutlip, 40, was arrested at the Brandon Correctional Centre and charged with second-degree murder.
James Vernon Giesbrecht
RCMP said Giesbrecht, a 37-year-old Brandon man, was killed on Oct. 13, 2022. Unidentified remains were found that day in the trunk of a burned 2007 Honda Accord in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis. Giesbrecht did not die in connection with the fire, RCMP said Tuesday.
Giesbrecht was reported missing in December, RCMP said.
The remains were linked to Giesbrecht through the National Forensics Lab in January, and RCMP had deemed the death a homicide by that point.
Investigators determined the Accord was stolen in Regina and were able to identify the person responsible for the theft of the car. That person was not involved in the killing, RCMP said.
One of the suspects gained possession of the car at some point, police said.
RCMP put out several pleas to the public for help in solving the crime since the body was found, and said “valuable information was received from the public.”
Crime analysts “worked diligently to find linkages to the suspects,” RCMP said.
No other suspects are being sought in connection with the slaying, police said.
