Sioux Valley High School staff and students celebrated the coming fall equinox by taking part in a feast and round dance at their building located in Brandon’s west end.

This event, which took place on Friday afternoon, was open to all the school’s students in grades 7-12 alongside any parents, guardians, guests or elders who wanted to take part.

The spread provided by staff included a variety of soups, some chili, fruit, vegetables, store-bought pastries and Bannock that was prepared in-house.

Principal Colleen Hall told the Sun that this annual fall feast is a good way to kick off the school year and get students “back in the groove” following the summer months.

According to Hall, Sioux Valley High School’s student population currently sits at around 160 pupils.

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation purchased the school in 2011 with the aim of establishing a curriculum that emphasizes Dakota traditions, culture and history.

This includes offering an accredited course in the Dakota language and a course in “the history of Sioux Valley,” according to the First Nation’s official website.
