Something Rotten is coming to Brandon, and for those who love musicals and love to laugh, it will be a perfectly fun show, said Lisa Vasconcelos, director of Mecca Productions.
Vasconcelos announced Mecca’s new season of four plays that will start with Something Rotten, running Nov. 2-5 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (WMCA).
Almost as soon as the first musical wraps, the curtain will rise on elf Jr., running Nov. 23-25. It will be the first time the production company has offered a fall kids’ musical.

In May 2024, Mecca will present its annual spring musical with The Lion King Jr., from May 9 to 11.
It will feature kids from Grade 3 to Grade 12 from across southern Manitoba, including communities of Dauphin, Virden, Souris, Minnedosa, Neepawa and Strathclair.
The show season will wrap next summer with RENT, which Mecca will present June 13-15, also at the WMCA.
For the performances of RENT, Mecca Productions will partner with the Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC), Brandon Pride and Pflag Brandon, which stands for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gay.
Each of those organizations will be invited to set up booths with educational material in the lobby of the WMCA during the run of the play.
Vasconcelos said it’s important for her production company members to present shows that positively impact the community, and added, “Because that’s the purpose of the arts, right?”
“We chose RENT because it speaks directly to the issues that our community is grappling with, and not just around inclusion, and transgender people, people in non-traditional relationships and how some people are struggling with that. It’s not just those things, but it’s also around homelessness, and around drug addiction,” said Vasconcelos.
